David Evans a member if our group who has lived with type 1 diabetes foer over 60 years
The Diabetes UK Thanet group is one of over 350 voluntary groups situated throughout the UK.
Diabetes is a major medical condition with over 2.6 million people affected in the UK. There are over 6,000 people with diabetes in Thanet, but with the right care and medical advice this can be controlled to allow a relatively normal life.
The aim of the group is to provide a local support platform for discussion of issues and problems and to take advantage of the knowledge of guest speakers in the field of diet, podiatry and lifestyle.
Speakers have included Richard Lane MBE who was the first person in the UK to receive islet transplantation, a major advance in the treatment of diabetes. Meetings are not confined to diabetes but also other speakers of local interest as well as organised social events throughout the year.
Everyone affected by diabetes is welcome, whether newly diagnosed or longer term, along with carers, family and friends. There is always the opportunity to talk to other members of the group, ask questions and share experiences.
There is no membership fee to join the group or requirement to be a member of Diabetes UK, although there many benefits and all are encouraged to do so.
