Diabetes UK; the charity for people with diabetes has a network of around 300 groups throughout the UK. Your local group supports people in and around the Thanet area of Margate, Broadstairs, and Ramsgate, Westgate-on Sea and Birchington and has been in existence since 1975. Monthly meetings are held every month excluding January, July, August and December( Our Christmas Dinner is held at an earlier date this month) at Northdown House, Northdown Park, Cliftonville, Margate CT9 3TP at 7.30 on the last Thursday of every month. Programme for discussions of issues concerning diabetes and to take advantage of the knowledge of guest speakers in the fields of podiatry, diet, and life style. Meetings are not restricted to diabetes, occasionally speakers of local interest, as well as organised social events. Everyone affected by diabetes is welcome, whether newly diagnosed or long term along with family friends and carers.
There is always the opportunity to talk to other members of the group, share experiences and ask questions. REMEMBER there is no membership fee to join our group, but there is an opportunity to join Diabetes UK which the advantage in becoming a member enables you to keep up to date with the latest research, talk to them personally and at the same time support this valuable charity.

- July & August No Group meetings we reopen 24th Sept. 2015
This year Diabetes UK has teamed up with The British Heart Foundation for Tesco Charities of the year. Our Group will continue to support this event by way of collecting in store and continuing to raise awareness of Diabetes to the public
If anybody is willing to help the committee in our fund raising events; please come forward.
Again this year we hope to attend the QEQM summer fete, and the August Bank Holiday Fete at Broadstairs.
Plus School Fetes, where we hold soft toy Tombola’s and for this year we hope to hold a “Pirate” Event.
If anyone knows of any fetes or events (churches, schools) where we would be welcome to attend please let us know. Also, if anybody has any soft toys from children, grandchildren, no longer wanted, donations will be gratefully received.
We have been approached by Sylvia Lamb Media Officer for DUK who hopes to report in a Thanet Newspaper about the reasons for the unusually high incidence of amputations amongst people with diabetes in the Thanet area.
Sylvia is asking for volunteers within the group who have previously or are currently suffering problems with their feet /legs, or indeed has had an amputation, ulcers, or other problems if they would be willing to share their experiences with her. They could of course remain anonymous should they wish. Please contact Eileen if you are interested.
Kathy Ellis Lead Nurse continues with her study on why a number of Type 2 Diabetics on Insulin find it difficult to control their condition. We look forward to hearing more from her in the future.
Patient Transport Service
I attended a Clinical Commissioning Group meeting in January for the Patient Transport Service. Apparently the existing service finishes next year 2016 and the purpose of the meeting is to put together a new Service Specification which sets out the quality Standards expected in 2016. Views and opinions were noted from the public on the existing service and how it can be improved.
The Committee felt that generally the meetings were fairly well attended, last year. If anyone has any new ideas for social events, speakers and fund raising please come forward.
I have continued in my request for Dr Mcgettigan to attend one of our meetings, after cancelling last year, but for some reason my emails and telephone call to him and his secretary are ignored-my apologies to all.
As a group and part of DUK we are totally self-funding and we are not allowed to charge a membership. Therefore please support our group by continuing to donate something for the raffle that is drawn every month (perhaps an unwanted present), all gratefully received.
A very enjoyable time was had by everyone at our annual Christmas celebration at this point I would like to say thankyou to all the members of the committee Pam, Phillip, Jacqueline, Geoff and Barbara for their help and support during 2014.
We were entertained by” Porteous and Archer, after enjoying a very nice meal. Photographs of the event are now on our website which is up and running on uk-thanet.diabetesukgroup.org (please select Albums)
In closing it just remains to say keep well, keep safe.
And we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in February
